    Died 1973 Nationality Austrian Edith Tudor-Hart, née Suschitzky, was one of the most significant documentary photographers working in Britain in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Vienna, she grew up in radical Jewish circles. Edith married Alex Tudor-Hart, a British doctor, and the pair moved to England.

    Edith destroyed her photographic records in 1951 for fear of prosecution, so the background to most of her work is now lost. She used photography to highlight social inequality and deprivation, realising early on – while studying at the Bauhaus – that photographs have the power to alter people’s beliefs and change the world.

    Whilst living in South Wales, Tudor-Hart began taking photographs for national magazines. Her photography was informed by her Communist ideals and served as a medium for exposing the conditions of the working class. In Gee Street, Finsbury, London (1936 or 1937),Tudor-Hart gives us an aerial view of an impoverished family.

    Edith Tudor-Hart ( née Suschitzky; 28 August 1908 – 12 May 1973) was an Austrian-British photographer and spy for the Soviet Union. Brought up in a family of socialists, she trained in photography at Walter Gropius's Bauhaus in Dessau, and carried her political ideals through her art.
