    Eadweard Muybridge, (1830-1904) Photography In 1867, Eadweard Muybridge returned to San Francisco as a photographer, mostly focusing on landscapes and architecture. He published photos of the Yosemite Valley wilderness and some areas around San Francisco, gaining reputation.

    Muybridge’s experiments in photographing motion began in 1872, when the railroad magnate Leland Stanford hired him to prove that during a particular moment in a trotting horse’s gait, all four legs are off the ground simultaneously. His first efforts were unsuccessful because his camera lacked a fast shutter.

    In direct competition with Carleton Watkin’s acclaimed Yosemite views of 1861 – 62 (Plate 26 ), Muybridge’s fifty-one mammoth plates, made in 1872, confirmed his reputation as a preeminent landscape photographer. They were ofered for sale by the San Francisco gallery of Bradley and Rulofson the following year.

    Muybridge went on to make sequences of movement diverse subjects from horses to birds to people climbing and descending stairs. In all, he produced over 100,000 photographs of animals and humans in motion. Leland’s racehorse, Occident, is moving at 36 feet per second. Its motion was frozen by one of Muybridge’s shutters at 1/1000s.
