The range of acceptable digital photos. “I think film has a usable dynamic range from minus 2 stops to plus 10 stops and beyond,” Lawson says. “I thought that at plus 8 stops and beyond, the film...

How dynamic range compares on film vs digital - DIY Photography

The Kodak TMAX film offered the higher dynamic range overall, with around 13 stops of acceptable (to Bill) exposure latitude. Everything from 2 stops underexposed to a crazy 10 stops overexposed worked quite well. With digital, it was slightly less at around 9 stops, with 6 stops underexposed to 2 stops overexposed looking good.

Film vs Digital Photography Debate (Which is Really Better?)

Traditional film uses a dynamic range of 13 stops. Digital cameras are now reaching 14 stops, with the Sony A7R III system hitting almost 15. Film was the dominant force in dynamic range, and they still beat low to mid-range digital cameras. But now the tide is turning, and some digital cameras are now leading the field.

With a higher dynamic range, film is better at capturing white’s and blacks’ details and can’t be replicated with digital cameras. Also, film can capture subtle details lost in digital photography. Film is more forgiving of minor focusing issues and exposure problems. Film captures photos at higher resolution than most digital cameras.

Let’s take a look at the main advantages of film photography. Higher dynamic range First and foremost, film photography has a higher dynamic range than digital photography. This means that the variances in tones between an image’s highlights and shadows are much greater. The image quality of film across the board tends to be consistently higher.

Is there a difference in dynamic range between film and …

It's safe to say that the usable dynamic range of film is superior to digital if we're talking 35mm B&W film. When you get to the larger formats like 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 or 4 x 5 the difference is even more striking. Most tests that you see on the internet compare digital to 35mm film, a format that film photographers refer to as a miniature film.

Film technology has existed for well over a century and remains in use today, but in recent decades, a new form of photography has risen to prominence: digital photography. Today's digital cameras are inexpensive, and they produce high-quality digital images. Meanwhile, dedicated photography purists remain committed to traditional film cameras ...

Film vs Digital (& Why Film & Lomography Is Still Amazing)

This used to be true, but modern digital sensors have gotten to the point that they can go toe-to-toe with film dynamic range. However, the dynamic range in film tends toward the highlights (as in, it’s difficult to blow out highlights when using film), whereas dynamic range in digital tends toward the shadows (that is, you can recover a lot of shadow detail).

In my mind, none - dynamic range is a characteristic of the system design itself; the 8 stop range for digital is a limitation of current design, and soon you'll see 13-14 stop ranges if not more. As for film - the whole thing - silver halide, development time etc., forms a system with some dynamic range.

Film vs. Digital - Ken Rockwell

    https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm
DYNAMIC RANGE: Film has a huge advantage in recording highlights. We take for granted the fact that specular highlights and bright sunsets look the way they do in painting and on film. Digital has a huge problem with this (see disadvantages under digital below.)
