I'll ask this in the Canon forum as well. I'll be shooting the NHRA drag race this weekend. I have media and photo access. Which do you think would be a better combo? 200 mm 1.8 with a 1.4 ext. or. 400 mm 2.8. Of course I will have my 70-200L IS 2.8, 16-35L IS 2.8 as well. I'll be shooting with the 1D and D30 (sorry Nikon folks).

Equipment: Lovett recommends a 35mm camera and a minimum of two lenses, a medium to long zoom (such as an 85-200mm) for on-track action and pit portraits and a wide-angle (28-35mm) to cover a wider variety of pit action. Remember to bring spare batteries and enough memory cards to get you through the day.

It really depends on what you're going for as well... panning, stop action, blurred action. Depending on what drag strip you're shooting at the 28-80 would probably work just fine because of the crop factor of the 40D. I shot with the Canon 28-135 and it was more then enough.

The shutter speed should be equal to or greater (faster) than the focal length of the lens (eg., 200mm lens = 1/200th shutter speed or faster) to avoid camera movement as you take your photo. If you have a zoom lens like a 75-300 then this rule would apply at the longer focal length (1/300th of a second or faster).

Photos OK to edit. Jun 21, 2010. #2. If it is bright I would use shutter speed priority. It's all depend whether you are panning or not. If you want to ha crisp subject with blurry background then you need to pan. If you just want crisp subject and background then I would use the fastest shutter your lens can handle. OP.
