- I wouldn't use anything other then rechargeable NiMH batteries in my flash. A good set of NiMH batteries recycle faster than alkalines, and they'll be good for hundreds of recharge cycles making them both more cost-effective and less detrimental to the environment. Eneloops are the standard by which all other NiMH batteries are measured.

- Worth noting that NiMH batteries are almost without exception the batteries of choice for speedlites. Panasonic Eneloops, particularly, are widely well-regarded as the professional standard. They last longer, recycle much faster than awful alkalines (and can recycle more frequently), they run much cooler, and they're rechargeable! I don't think you'll find even a …

- My experience is, rechargable NiMH AA batteries work great in a flash. They will recycle your flash in just a little over half the time alkaline batteries take. The alkalines start out fairly good (but not as fast as the NiMHs), but very quickly decline to being very slow.

- About $20 for the charger and 2 AAs and about $13 for a pack of 4 more AAs. They last a *long* time in the flash and I have noticed the flash recycle time is so much quicker than with disposable AAs. Plus, they really do recharge in 15 minutes so even if you don't have a bunch of spares, you won't have to wait long.

- I'm prompted to post this because of Shun's post about flash unit battery packs. For a number of years I've been using rechargeable nicad batteries in my three Nikon SB600 strobes, which just barely last me through the concert/events I cover. Recently I decided to try a set of lithium ion (non rechargeable) batteries just to see how well they work.

- Short answer: while a flash will work okay with alkaline batteries, other types are better. Nikon produces excellent manuals for their flashes, with a lot of great technical information (rivaled in this area only by Metz). The following is from the SB-600 User Manual, page 19:
