    Additional benefits. Aside from protecting your pictures from harsh light, lens hoods can physically protect your camera gear too. This is one of the reasons I leave mine on at all times since I often bump and bang my camera. Having a hood protruding from your lens means it will absorb the brunt of most impacts.

    Of course its possible to take beautiful photos with the 100mm f/2.8 without a hood. However a lens hood does help in a few ways: It protects the lens so when doing macro photos you don't accidentally get to close without any reduction of photo quality. It also help keep stray light from affecting your photo.

    I always use a hood for macro. Any light the hood blocks is not light you want falling on the lens: it's outside the image, and only contributes to lens flare. (I use a flash, but it's usually far enough off-axis to avoid the hood.) But more to the point, I don't think the lens hood is the source of your dark images.
