    D700 is a great camera and it works pretty well for a stage photography. I used it multiple times with 50mm, 24-70 and even 70-200. without flashlight. I would recommend using a battery grip to reach 8fps. It helped me many times (IMO 5fps not always enough). However, it slightly depends on what you mean by "stage photography".
