Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Astrophotography Review

The Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM isn’t a spectacular performing f/1.8 lens, but it is very good at f/2.8 and higher f/numbers. For such a cheap price, it’s a very useful and affordable astrophotography tool, particularly for panorama stitching. I would expect substantially better performance from other 50mm-ish lenses like the Sigma …

Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II review: Digital Photography Review

    https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-50-1p8-ii-c16
The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II is the least expensive lens currently available for the EOS system, and has been in the lineup since late 1990. It's a simplified version of the original EF 50mm F1.8 of 1987 (often referred to as the 'Mark I') which was supplied as standard with some of Canon's earliest 35mm EOS SLRs; however it can trace its lineage back a lot further than …

Suitability of Canon 50mm f1.8 Lens for Astrophotography

    https://stargazerslounge.com/topic/204950-suitability-of-canon-50mm-f18-lens-for-astrophotography/
I second this. The f/2.8 40 mm "pancake" STM is a much better build and quality than the plastic f/1.8 50 mm. But getting the pancake, maybe the f/1.4 50 mm would be a better choice? I have an f/2.8 11-16 mm Tokina lens that can get away with 20 and 25 second exposures, where as my f/5.6 280 mm only takes 2 seconds to make star trails.

Is the Canon EF 50 mm F1.8 worth it for Astrophotography?

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAstrophotography/comments/ewo50d/is_the_canon_ef_50_mm_f18_worth_it_for/
I just got a 135mm vintage takumar lens for $40 which would give you a much longer FL and would be quite a bit cheaper. 135mm is still what I’d consider wide field for astrophotography. Sounds like you already have decent daytime lenses, for AP you don’t need autofocus and everything is shot in manual mode anyway.

In the following post, I’ll share my experiences using 2 astonishingly affordable camera lenses for astrophotography. I shoot with both full-frame and APS-C sized sensor Canon DSLR’s, so the lenses are both made by Canon. The Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 STM, and the Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 wide-angle lens. It’s not possible for me to recommend a ...
