Canon 400mm f5.6L Lens Review — First Man Photography

    https://www.firstmanphotography.com/photography-gear-reviews/reviews/canon-400mm-f5-6l-review
The focus of the Canon 400mm f5.6L is accurate and generally locks on well. The Canon 400mm f5.6L lens is not perfect however. Although the f/5.6 aperture allows canon to keep the weight down, it is not the best low light performer. To capture birds in flight and other wildlife you generally want a nice fast shutter speed to freeze the action ...

There are many other options for bird photography. Heavier lenses with superior auto-focus include the Canon 500mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 and the Canon 400mm f/2.8. You could also opt for a Canon 300mm f/2.8 and use with extenders. There’s also the 400mm f/4 DO – light enough to hand-hold but with very mixed reviews.

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6: good for birding? - BirdForum

This lens IMO, is the poor man's birding solution. Lightweight, easy to handhold for hours, super fast AF (it has an AF limiter switch , sharp wide open, built-in lenshood, and it works oh-so-well with the cheap Tamron 1.4X TC (896mm FOV on a 1.6X camera). Even with the 1.4X attached, the AF is still decently fast.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens has been one of the most highly anticipated lens in the past 5 years. Is Canon 400 f5.6 still worth buying for bird photography

    https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1481313/
I have wondering if its worth buying used Canon 400 f5.6 for bird photography on Canon 7D. I did try the Tamron 150-600 lens and found images to be soft at 600mm. Also is there another upgrade to this lens (Canon 400mm f5.6) coming in near future ? Thanks, Deepak The 400mm is a great lens especially for the price.
