- I shot this one of the persids, with a Nikon 24-70 in a fairly light polluted sky. Full size photo available from Flikr https://flic.kr/p/xie4Gp. Lots of PP, lots of manual vignetting correction, lots of smearing and coma in the corners, but for a websized print it did alright. I would advise a wider prime personally.

- For the milky way, 14 to 35mm are nice FL. The canon 24-70 f2.8 II is a great lens for mw at 24mm. To include the mw in landscapes, probably just 14-24mm. The land composition is what makes a milky way scene, I think. For Spring, I'd scout your location during the day. Return during total darkness and catch the milky way scene.
