One thing to consider about the 16-35mm III for astrophotography is the increased level of vignetting compared to the previous 16-35 model. Fixing the +4 stops of vignetting results in more noise in the corners. In the review below, Dustin talks in some detail about the vignetting.

Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II for Astrophotography? - reddit

I use the 16-35 2.8 II on a mk III body and it's pretty good for astrophotography but I'm planning on switching soon to the f/4 IS just for the extra sharpness. Also you're only losing one stop from 2.8 to 4, and remember you're using a camera that seems to be functional up to ISO 1 billion.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens Review

    https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-16-35mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens.aspx
The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens is a great option for the wide work at a wedding and for other photojournalism needs. While the f/4 aperture is not as adept at stopping action in low light as the f/2.8 counterpart, IS has great value in these venues. Consider allowing subject movement to show action in some of your venue photos.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens $1,300 Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens $2,100 The truth is that with the 14mm you are going to pay a lot more money for a less versatile lens. Having the ability to change focal length and magnification on the fly is a luxury which you will quickly come to miss while using a prime lens.
