- Note: No solar filters are required to capture the eclipse since GoPro lenses are wide and it doesn’t affect the sensor like a telephoto lens would be pointing directly at the Sun. Have fun, and keep those eyes protected! For more tips, check out David Newman's full take on capturing the moment. SHARE

- Best case scenario: You will just get an image with a bright dot (the sun) passing through the sky and maybe getting detectably dimmer briefly in the middle of the time laps. Gopro isn't the right tool for this approach. Maybe setup a camera obscura and take a time lapse of that instead. 172andyou, Aug 11, 2017. #3.

- The FOV on the GoPro would prevent you from taking any detailed shots of the eclipse itself, but that doesn't mean that you should leave the camera home. A time lapse of the environment getting darker and brighter could be epic. Crowd shots could be fun, and even a POV could be interesting in the right setting.

- Edit: thanks so much for the advice. You're right about it seeming an odd camera to shoot it with. My parents are on a northern lights cruise and want to film it, I think they've got an old dslr with them but they're more comfortable with the gopro and maybe want to set it up in some context to show the eclipse and where they are.
