I have a concern, since D3100 doesn't have ir sensor, will it effect my camera if i take multiple long exposures? Is it harmful to the camera? Thanks, GJ

- When using "bulb" - you have to have the shutter-button pressed, as long as you want to expose the sensor. If you just press and release, the shutterspeed will be as long as the time from press to release. The exposure-mode has to be "M". Page 111 in the manual. When using ML-3 remote, the release-mode has to be set to "Remote".
