The 300mmF4 is a better lense (its one of Nikon's best) but it is more than 2x the price of the 70-300. The 70-300 is fine for waterfowl in parks, birds in back yard, and taking pictures of birds on good light. The 12mp of the D5000 gives you a great deal of crop range. There seems to be some variability in the 70-300 lense.

Nikon D850 or D500 for Bird Photography

    https://www.tonywhitehead.com/wildlight/archives/10321
The combination of D500 and 300mm f4PF and 1.4x teleconverter in a pocket remains an extremely light and capable walk around kit that provides a similar result to the D850 with 500mm f5.6PF. There has never been a better time to be a bird photographer. Compared to even a few years ago the capability/cost ratio of gear is amazing.

Nikon D500 what mode do you advise for bird photography?

    https://www.birdforum.net/threads/nikon-d500-what-mode-do-you-advise-for-bird-photography.411148/
The D500 is invariant to ISO, that means that you can always give more light in post procession with no loss of image quality if necessary. In order to avoid blown highlights (loss of detail in plumage) I usually underexpose by about 1 EV using the dedicated button. Make sure you shoot Raw, or else what I say won't work.

5 Tips on Using the Nikon D850 for Bird Photography

A good idea is to be at a distance of around 300-400mm from the bird. This way, you can capture as much detail as possible. Such a close distance will reduce the need to zoom in too much, keeping the picture’s clarity and pixels intact. If you’re a D850 user, you’d know how sleek and compact the body of this camera is.
