    The only really accurate way to meter is to use a handheld meter that's set to incident metering (ie. measuring the light that bounces onto the subject, not what reflects off it). For most cases, with digital photography, you won't need this. Take a shot, check the histogram, if it's underexposed, adjust it on the fly.
