    Meeting as students at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1957, Bernd and Hilla Becher first collaborated on photographing and documenting the disappearing German industrial architecture in 1959. The Ruhr Valley, where Becher’s family had worked in the steel and mining industries, was their initial focus.

    Hilla Becher (born Hilla Wobeser at 2nd September 1934 in Potsdam – died 10th October 2015 Düsseldorf) was a German conceptual photographer. She was well known for her industrial photographs, or typologies, with longtime collaborator and husband, Bernd Becher.

    Becher studied typography at the Staatlichen Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, from 1957 to 1961. In 1959 Becher began to work with Hilla Wobeser in Düsseldorf, Germany as freelance artistic and industrial photographers. In 1961 the Bechers married and began to develop a project of documentary photography of industrial constructions in the Netherlands.
