- 70-200/2.8 is a good versatile lens if you are shooting from the spectator stands, and also an excellent lens for other non-badminton shooting. a tad bit on the slow side for local gyms but more than sufficient for SIS. VR is mostly useless for badminton but the 70-200/2.8 has a much faster focus speed when compared to the 80-200/2.8 AF-D.

- The Pentax 50 f/1.4 is maybe not the best lens for this challenge, but will work, provided you can get down close to the action. Looks like you can. I have the Pentax f/1.4 and also a Pentax 35 f/2, both excellent and fast lenses; but I generally shoot with a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8.

- - A faster focusing USM lens like the 85m 1.8 which you have already thought of, but before you buy it establish the aperture you need to have the whole player in focus; if you need f4 then a more flexible lens like a 70-200 f4 might make more sense. Of course Canon makes the lens you want, a 70-200 f2.8, but that's a lot of money.

- From that 4-day tournament, here is what I learn. 1. You really need a F2.8 lens or faster. 2. Most of the time you will need to shoot at iso 800 and above. 3. Shutter speed 1/320 and above. 4. Lens choice - something with a 70-200mm will be sufficient.
