AT 70mm your lens probably has a maximum aperture of f/4 and at 300mm a maximum aperture of f/5.6. Focus manually to 'infinity' You may have to do a little bit of preparation before it gets dark. Point your camera at an extremely distant object and focus on it. Make a note of the position on the lens' focus scale.

This is a testament to the high-quality optics of the 300mm F/4L lens, and an important factor to consider when choosing a camera lens for astrophotography. Capturing sharp, accurately colored stars is the ultimate challenge for optical equipment, and the Canon EF 300mm F/4L passes with flying colors. The field is also extremely flat, another ...

Using a Canon EF 75-300mm Lens for Astrophotography

    https://astrobackyard.com/canon-ef-75-300-astrophotography/
The Canon EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III lens is a budget telephoto zoom lens (4x) that can be used for astrophotography. This lens is often bundled as a kit with an entry-level Canon EOS Rebel DSLR camera. In my experience, the Canon EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III lens does an impressive job at capturing the night sky, considering the price.

The first telephoto lens of choice, especially recommended for beginners, is the 135mm F2.5 SMC Pentax. This lens has the Pentax K bayonet mount, and requires the K-EOS adapter for attachment to Canon EOS cameras.

I could take steel wool and rub it on the front of this lens and get better images than the Canon EF 70-300mm III USM lens. Very much worth the ~$170-$180 new cost on eBay. I imaged M45 and M31 using the matching DG APO 1.4x teleconverter. Just a teeny little bit of coma, but zero CA and great center sharpness.
