- The best advice for a beginner is to start as a visual observer (that 10" Dob is more than good enough) and learn the sky. Have some fun, etc. Use the time to learn about imaging and, if you're still up for it, dive in with your eyes open. Note that even with tracking it'll be hard to take great astro-photos with a Dob.

- Generally, we do NOT recommend doing astrophotography with your Dobsonian telescope, as the lack of a tracking mount or an equatorial mount will make long exposures impossible. That being said, photographs of the Moon, planets, and very short exposures of bright nebulae are doable with the right expectations.

- Dobsonians can provide fantastic views of both deep sky objects and solar system objects like planets and the moon. This is due to their large aperture and therefore light-gathering area. Other than Dobsonians, telescopes in the sub-$500 price range rarely exceed 4″ in aperture due to their cost to produce.

- Your 10″ Dobsonian probably has a focal length of about 1250mm. Using the rule of 500, this means that you will have to keep exposures to less than about 2.5 seconds to avoid visible star trails. This pretty much limits you to solar system objects. With a DSLR you will have a field of view of about 1 degree.

- No, a 10" aperture is certainly not too big. Many of us think it the smallest aperture that can truly be a lifetime scope for DSO observing. I'm 71 and considerably smaller than you and my 10" is my "little Dob" that is easily handled without any difficulty. When you get it you will see.

- The 10 inch is the most recommended Dob on this forum. Many members keep this one even when they move on to larger scopes. It offers relatively easy mobility (with some careful planning) and most of the view of bigger scopes. It has serious capabilities. With the best eyepieces from Tele Vue, you will be in for a treat.
