    When preparing A Ten Years’ War (1900) and The Battle with the Slum (1902), Riis was able to acquire professional photographs, from which he ordered copy negatives, copy prints, and lantern slides.     In 1870, the 21-year-old Jacob Riis emigrated from Denmark in a thriving and growing new York. The young man had $ 40 in his pocket, a gold locket with a lock of his girlfriend, whom he had left, and the dream to work as a carpenter.     Biography Early life. Born in 1849 in Ribe, Denmark, Jacob Riis was the third of the 15 children (one of whom, an orphaned niece, was fostered) of Niels Edward Riis, a schoolteacher and writer for the local Ribe newspaper, and Carolina Riis (née Bendsine Lundholm), a homemaker. Among the 15, only Jacob, one sister, and the foster sister survived into the twentieth century.
