- ALFRED P. MAUDSLAY (1850-1931) Inspired by the travel accounts of Stephens and Catherwood, Alfred P. Maudslay carried out eight expeditions to the Maya area between 1881 and 1894. His more detailed work deals with six sites: Copán, Quirigua, Yaxchilán, Chichen Itza and Palenque. He photographed the monuments and their inscriptions, and made moulds with plaster and paper.

- Alfred took many photos on the 6.5 x 8.5 inch camera, and more on his 10 x 12 inch one, all using heavy glass negatives which had to be transported with great care. The labour involved in this four-and-a-half month venture had been tremendous but the outstandingly detailed photographs that resulted were ample recompense.

The hieroglyphic stairway at Palenque | British Museum

- Maudslay photographed the inscription and had plaster casts made from paper moulds he created at the site. He also published a meticulous drawing of the inscription, made by Annie Hunter. These combined records represent the most detailed version of the text on the hieroglyphic stairway there is.
