- Air Gap Flash V1 Is A 16,000 Volts Flash “For The Masses”. Oct 21, 2013 by Udi Tirosh 8 Comments. One of our favorite makers, Maurice Ribble, who is the mind behind the wonderful CameraAxe high speed photography system just released what I think is the first in the world (or at least in the last 10 years) to-the-masses AirGap flash.
New Airgap flash provides ultra-high-speed illumination

- Dubbed the Airgap flash, it'll pour 16,000 volts into an air-filled tube (compare that to the 300 volts of a normal strobe), giving an incredibly fast flash duration. The flash itself is …

- The spacing between the capacitor leads is about 30mm. The greater the distance the greater the voltage needed to break the gap down, and the brighter the flash will be. 1mm of distance does not correspond to 1kV here, since the spark is tracking along a surface. I found at just 20kV, my capacitor would breakdown the 30mm gap when triggered.

- An air-gap flash is a photographic light source capable of producing sub-microsecond light flashes, allowing for (ultra) high-speed photography. This is achieved by a high-voltage (20 kV typically) electric discharge between two electrodes over a quartz (or glass) tube's surface.

- The air-gap flash was built from readily available scavenged and new electronic components, very similar to the EG&G MicroFlash 549. The flash was triggered by an Arduino microprocessor with user selectable delay of about 1 millisecond using a piezo microphone to detect the shot.

- Air-Gap Strobes use a different mechanism to produce light. They form an electric ark. The strobe juices the arc by discharging a 35,000 volt capacitor. This makes the Flux capacitor. Maurice Ribble (who is the smarts behind CameraAxe) built one of those behemoth. It produces amazing-time-stopping photographs. It also can kill you.

Flash (photography) - Wikipedia
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_(photography)
- An air-gap flash is a high-voltage device that discharges a flash of light with an exceptionally short duration, often much less than one microsecond. These are commonly used by scientists or engineers for examining extremely fast-moving objects or reactions, famous for producing images of bullets tearing through light bulbs and balloons (see Harold Eugene Edgerton ).
