Great tutorial, I would just add that the bracket is pretty important because in the freezing cold it is hard to keep the camera steady if you hold it up to the lens. Also, seems people (along with myself) are having issues with Registax Version 6 so stick with version 5 as you mentioned until it gets fixed.

Afocal Astrophotography Experiment – SKY LIGHTS

    https://sky-lights.org/2021/01/25/afocal-astrophotography-experiment/
Afocal Astrophotography Experiment. January 25, 2021. The Grand Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn on Dec 21, 2020 was a chance to experiment with a new (at least to me) astrophotography technique: afocal imaging with a smartphone camera. Most astrophotos you see in Sky Lights were taken with my Canon 20D, using either a telephoto or wide angle lens, or …

Afocal What? Unless you’re old enough to have learned astrophotography from the Sam Brown booklets (above) that Edmund Scientific sold for less than a dollar during the 1960s, chances are you haven’t had much experience with afocal photography and may not even be familiar with the term. Nevertheless, every clear night amateurs with digital ...

I've just been reading your guide to "Afocal" astrophotography. It's very interesting indeed - particularly the sections on exposure times and "f" numbers to use. You seem to have mastered the art! Your photos are excellent. I particularly liked the 2004 Jupiter. That was a nice well focussed and naturally coloured shot.

Afocal Astrophotography Help, Please! - posted in Beginning Deep Sky Imaging: Hi all,I’m strictly a visual observer and quite content to stay that way! So why, you might ask, am I posting a question here? Well, I’d like to start keeping a “photo log” of what I’ve observed instead of sketches or notes. My observations are primarily of the planets and the Messier and …

Cassiopeia Observatory - Article - How I Do Astrophotography

    http://www.weasner.com/co/articles/HowIDoAstrophotography/index.html
Afocal astrophotography uses an eyepiece on the telescope. The camera (with its lens) looks at what the eyepiece "sees", just like your eye. Magnification can be greater than when doing prime focus imaging, but as magnification is increased the object becomes dimmer (requiring longer exposures and/or higher ISO values) and accurate tracking/guiding will become more important.
