- Realistically, to capture star fields without significant star trails you are looking at exposures of between 15-30 seconds at F2.8 and ISO 1600-3200 with a 35-50 mm lens. Using a 500mm lens/mirror would narrow the field of view dramatically, and extend the exposure time significantly since I think mirror lenses rarely have an aperture smaller than f8 or f5.6.
