- Short answer, it's film, film has grain and the process of scanning tends to emphasize grain. To reduce this effect, use a lower ISO film, like 100 or 160. Any of the professional grade films from Kodak or Fuji will be much finer grained than the Ultramax 400, thus less grainy scans. For the ultimate in fine grain, try a roll of Kodak E100.
