I prefer the 16:9 format for horizontal shots but for vertical prefer the 4:3 simply because all screens and TV's are 16:9 these days gives a nice filling image during a slide show. Even shooting raw with Olympus still shoots 4:3 but with the "crop" window already per-defined for post-processing.
